Care and Feeding Instructions

Caring for your KOWboard is a simple process that will ensure your KOW will survive the years to come.
Don't worry, you won't need hip-waders and a shovel for this, just some oil, wax, and a clean cloth.

KOWs need love too

These instructions will guide you through the steps necessary to keep your KOW healthy and in top condition. Properly cared for, your KOW could outlast you.

Clean your KOW

After every use, you should wash your KOWboard with a mild soap and warm water. Hot water will remove the wax from the board, and strong soap may leave a lasting soapy residue in the wood that could pass to any foods you place on the board.

Under no circumstances should you put your KOW in the dishwasher. They don't like it. We learned that the hard way, and hoofprints are a dead giveaway that the repairs won't be covered by warranty.

After washing (by hand), dry the board, and then let it rest in the room until any remaining moisture on the wood has evaporated.

That's it. Park your KOW until you need it again.
If your board is showing signs of wear, or you notice the board appears dry to the touch and looks like it is drying out (the wood will get lighter, less vibrant), move on to the next steps.

Sand your... KOW?

No matter how loudly your KOW complains, you might have to sand it sometimes. This step should be considered optional unless the board has deep scratches that oiling does not remove or reduce.

If the board has scratches that do not self-heal, you can sand it smooth with some steel wool or sand paper. For more heavily used boards, you may need an orbital sander (also known as a DA or Random Orbital sander). Sand the board using circular patterns, working your way across the board from edge to edge. If you notice sanding marks, use a finer grit sandpaper after removing the deep scratches.

Grease your KOW up

Yeah, we can't believe we said that either.
Using food grade mineral oil, we recommend Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil, apply a thin and even layer of oil to the surfaces of the board and allow to dry overnight. The board will soak the oil in. Optionally, a second thin coat can be applied the second day, wiping away any remainder with a dry paper towel after several hours.

For extra water protection and shine, apply a layer of butcher block wax, again, we highly recommend the Walrus Oil products and their Wood Wax. Apply a thin layer in a circular motion using a clean and dry terry cloth rag or paper towel. Let it sit for fifteen minutes, then buff it off for that fresh from the farm look.
